The archive is derived from a date list assembled by Professor Antonio Gilman (California State University, Northridge) from the archaeological bibliography for the Iberian Peninsula; those collected by Professor Rafael Micó (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona) and those courtesy of Antonio Rubinos (Instituto de Química Física Rocasolano - CSIC).

The CPRL's great value led it to be declared part of the CSIC's heritage in 1995. The original documentation is currently held in the Tomás Navarro Tomás library in the CSIC's Center for Humanities and Social Sciences (CCHS). In the 1990s Juan M. Vicent of the CCH's Institute of History directed a project to conserve the CPRL, which was digitalized and published on line. Its inclusion in IDEArq now makes the CPRL available through the geographic location of the rock art sites.
Levantine Rock Art sites of the Iberian Peninsula are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
